Right now, everyone is decorating for the holidays or getting ready to. But if you live in an apartment or rental home, you may be wringing your hands worrying that you may lose your deposit if you put up a decoration that violates your lease. The good news is that the Spirit of Christmas Future has smiled on renters just like yourself because there are lots of lease-friendly ways that you can spruce up the roost for the holiday season.
The possibilities are endless, but here are a few ideas we came up with to help get the creative juices flowing.
Rental Friendly Decor for the Holidays
The main purpose of these decoration ideas is to save your deposit to make future Holidays brighter. But we think you’ll find that these simple decoration ideas will also help you to save money, which means you might have a little extra to spend on what goes under the tree this year.
Holiday Lights
You may feel uneasy hammering nails into the exterior of your rental space, and rightly so. But you do not necessarily have to use nails at all. You can use sturdy exterior features to anchor your lights. Use the upper angle of a gutter drain to wrap a wire around and string it over the ledge over the top of window exteriors. Loop light strings around a tree branch and go from there. You may be able to use strategically placed thumbtacks in wood which won’t leave noticeable holes.
Wreaths
You may not be allowed to hammer a nail into your front door, but you can certainly make do with a large ribbon. It doesn’t cause damage, and it’s much more colorful.
Stockings
You may not have a lot of real estate on which to hang stockings, but there are plenty of alternatives. Instead of nailing them to a mantelpiece, use them as coffee table coasters. You could use Velcro tape to affix them to a metal light stand. For a real twist, you could save them for Christmas Eve, and sneak them into the sock drawers of their intended recipients. It’s an adorable twist on the tradition!
Other Alternatives
If you’re not permitted to have a tree inside or don’t have enough room, you could make a Christmas tree design in lights, ribbon, and 2D decorations on a wall. Better still, might be to hang a Christmas quilt and decorate it with your 2D tree, if it doesn’t already have one.
You could also create a faux fireplace using the same techniques. Create your make-believe fireplace using a lot of lights to simulate the brightness of fire.
Available shelving may not be up to the task of supporting heavy candles and other Christmas decorations. Use construction paper to make lightweight ornaments and other decorations. If you have a prominently placed shelf in your front room, consider making your faux fireplace under it. Use the shelf as a mantle, and place all your Christmas cards on it.
